An Indian Cricket Fan in Pakistan - Day 2

Aslam Bhai then took us to the famous ‘motorway’, which is supposed to be the pride of Pakistan. Our visa was valid only for Lahore. We could not go outside the limits but we did drive for about 20 km. on the motorway. It connects Lahore to Islamabad a distance 300 km.; the roadside dhabas (shops) are typically Indian except the trucks are heavily decorated some of them carry the picture of the driver on the backside which is visible when your lights reflect on the truck. Some of the pictures could scare a normal person. We returned to our Hotel by 8 p.m.

I had an invitation for dinner through a friend of mine to a senior Pakistani Government official’s home. There was a big gathering of almost 40-50 people in his large home. He had put up a huge screen of 25 x 25 feet in his back yard on which the matches were shown through the Projection T.V. The women were initially separate but later on they joined us; pre-mixed Black label whiskey (genuine) was freely served. The crowd consisted of local industrialists and businessmen. There was a sumptuous dinner followed by Kulfa which is bigger than the Indian Kulfi.

In the night, there was a Muzra program at a Senator’s house which had some beautiful girls dancing to Indian and Pakistani music. Subsequently there was an adult version of Muzra.

It was thus clear that even though whisky is banned in Pakistan, it is freely available if we have the right contacts.

To be concluded …
