John Kerry gave a great acceptance speech yesterday at the Democratic National Convention at Boston. He spoke about why he is fit to be in office and why he is the better option when compared to the current Commander-in-Chief. He even introduced himself with, “I’m John Kerry, and I’m reporting for duty”. How cheesy was that?
Well, I thought that it was a great speech, but he spent way too much time concentrating on his military record and the war in Vietnam. There were others who also kept repeating ad nauseum, how great John Kerry was, to volunteer for military duty in Vietnam when he could have easily made other easier choices. I fail to understand why they would go to such great lengths to underline this one fact of his life. They almost seemed to imply that in these times of the War on Terrorism, a Commander-in-Chief is required to have a military background. In that case, I’m sure Wesley Clark has better credentials!
Kerry, talked about a number of issues. He spoke about his views and policies on the main issues and then everytime it would seem like his speech was over, he would come back to repeat what he had already said. Quite frankly, the flow of the speech was lost with all the repetition in it.
Compare that to Barack Obama’s speech. Distinct storyline, well delivered, minimum repetition of ideas. Plain simple text mixed with well delivered passionate oratory - A Historic Speech!
I’m sorry to say but the democratic nominee’s speech was great but it could have been better!
