The Independence One

Last week, on August 15th, India celebrated its 58th Independence Day. A day earlier it was Pakistan’s Independence Day. Incidentally, I was at an occasion celebrating a communion of sorts.

My close friend, Ali tied the knot in true Islamic fashion on the 15th. He is as international a person as you can get. His parents are from India and Pakistan respectively. His mom grew up in India and met his Dad on an ocean liner somewhere in the Far East, where he was travelling on work from Pakistan. They fell in love and decided to settle in Hong Kong. Born and brought up in Hong Kong, Ali grew up a British citizen but eventually came to the US to get his higher education.

The marriage itself was done according to Islamic rituals but there were prayers said by a Reverend, a Sufi elder and to top it all there was a Hindu prayer sung by the music band that played afterwards.

This event wasn’t going to be complete without some booty shaking and there was plenty of it. Live music from the latest Bollywood numbers was all that was required.

All of this on the eve of the Independence of India and Pakistan.
