Investing Simplicity

The middle of this year marked a change for our investment portfolio. Previously, it comprised of our 401k invested in a mix of international and US equity funds and investments in Indian equities through a family portfolio back home in India. A spattering of real estate in India completed the rest. However, after much prodding by a couple of well-intentioned friends, I moved my butt and began assembling the blocks of a more market optimal diversified portfolio together.

One of the best resources that I have been a reader of since - Seeking Alpha, a community aggregator/weblog of sorts that focuses on … well … seeking alpha!

If there is just one page that you read on there, let it be this one on investing using ETFs. Simplicity, tax-efficiency, lower cost and easier asset allocation are a few of the attractions of investing using ETFs. The in depth article on that site walks you through how to build a relative simple and easy ETF portfolio that is cheap and easy to maintain. It really can’t be beat for a starter, no-brainer portfolio.

In upcoming posts, I’ll detail out how I’ve gone about constructiing our portfolio and all that I have learn’t about investing in these short couple quarters.

BTW, if you are an investor, don’t be fazed by the huge sell-off today. Keep your long term goals in view and stick to investing simplicity!
